Which days does the bottom graph cover? If it is Sat/Sun, for instance, the performance is comparable (worse?) than the top graph.

I don't see why you think this is a "memory fragmentation problem". You're measuring CPU utilization, not memory consumption. It looks like thread contention. -- Emery (http://www.cs.umass.edu/~emery)
The memory allocation issue happened inside single thread. We didn't investigate malloc internals too much to explain, where exactly cpu cycles were leaked. -- Domas Mituzas
